By National Express coach. Definitely much cheaper, and may even be quicker.

Flying will get you to Gatwick Airport and will be quicker, however, you will still have to get to the Airport pass through controls and wait.
Train, change at Edinbourgh, Kings Cross and either use the First Capital Connect (ex Thameslink) service or Tube to Victoria and then onwards towards your destination. (rough travel time 8 - 10 hours depending on time of day and connections), but a lot less stressful.
Price range, well again as per earlier train answers book advance and you could make a good saving but there again you may find the Airline booking is cheaper. It all depends on where in West Sussex you want to travel to? If close to Crawley or Gatwick Areas, then i would fly, if further like down towards the coast region and I would more than likely would use the train as the add on tickets would more than likely bring it up to the same amount.

It depends where you're going in West Sussex. I'd fly to Gatwick from your nearest airport and then hire a car onwards or get a train from there. Book early if you can to get the best fares. The alternative is to fly to Bournemouth if you're looking for the coast or that south western part of the county (but don't know how feasible that is).
By train GNER to King's Cross then Tube or Thameslink. That's a long time though. You could get a better deal buying a promotion fare from Scotland to London and then another ticket to get to W. Sussex (It's three quid for the Tube or eight or nine quid to Gatwick/Crawley/East Grinstead etc. An alternative that cuts out London is Virgin Trains via Preston, Birmingham, Reading and East Croydon.
Don't get the coach - might not be that much cheaper, it'll take for ever and you'll not thank yourself for it.
