She drew some bad pictures of another girl at school and got in serious trouble at school. She was grounded already for throwing a fit about something dumb and at that time it was a week and she could slowly earn back privleges. She is only nine and I think she will forget why she is being punished if I go too long.

She won't forget a good spanking. For what she did, that's well over due. Plus she was already grounded, for us when our girls are grounded, if they get in more trouble, it's a spanking. Children will do anything to avoid spanking, as long as there done correctly (pants down). Grounding is good too, but since she got in more trouble, she is subconsciously asking for something more strict, spanking will do the trick. I have to say, props to you for still using consequences, now days parents are to worried about what they think will ruin self esteem. Lets go mom, come down hard on her!!!!

Good Luck

It sounds as though grounding may not be your best option, as it doesn't seem to make an impact. I discovered the same with my son. Rather than an all-purpose grounding, we have taken privileges away. If the offense is a rather large one, he may lose several privileges, with the opportunity to earn them back. To make an impact, you have to take away something important to them - something they will definitely notice, not something they couldn't care less about. We have found daily computer time or TV time to be particularly effective. I hate to take away anything that involves physical activity, like riding his bicycle, because it is so good for them. Another thought would be additional chores to make up for the offenses. In this case, I would consider having your daughter write a note of apology to the other girl, and drive her to the girl's house to deliver it in person. Things that make kids uncomfortable with their own actions generally make an impact, and cause them to think twice before doing something similar again. Good luck :)

First, you need to sit your daughter down and talk to her about why she drew the pictures and make sure you explain to her that it was wrong and let her know that if the situation was reversed, she wouldn't have liked anyone to draw pictures about her. Obviously, grounding her isn't working and to teach her a lesson, you should take away more things that she likes to do such as watch tv, hang out with friends, etc. Give her more chores to do around the house.

At 9yrs old, a girl needs to learn about being more responsable. She needs to learn that doing this stuff at school and getting into trouble is irresponsable.

My suggestion for punishment is to take away "privledges" all the way from letting her pour her own juice to washing her own hair because "if you can't act like a responsable 9yr old, then you don't get treated like a 9yr old- you get treated like a little kid again."

Most children hate this and it's a good tool for understanding why it's important to be responsable- which includes making good decisions at school.
Alternatively, if she seeks a better solution- like talking to you about a kid she doesn't like in her class, she gets more privledges for showing more responsability.

In the end, you need to teach her how to appropriately deal with these kinds of problems. I have a 9yr old step daughter who saw Hannah Montana on the Disney channel fake sick to get out of going to school. The next day, instead of her mom taking her to school, she dropped her off with me because she was "sick".

It's amazing how much kids learn from TV. Your daughter may have learned this stuff from seeing shows on TV.
You should sit down with her and teach her how to deal with these situations just to be sure she knows what's ok and what's not.
