I think that U.S. citizens need a passport to travel to all other countries now. You can still go to a U.S. terittory without a passport, but I think it is now required for other international travel.

I remember reading about some recent changes to where travel even to Canada or Mexico now requires a passport.

But you should always carry a passport on you, or proof of EU citizenship...police, etc. have the right to ask you for those types of documents....

No, you don't need a visa if you are american but you will need the passaport.
