I am renting an apartment in st. paul over the summer and next year and looking for a good dog that weighs between 6-12 lbs. I love the look of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels but I can't afford the $1500 price tag... any suggestions?

A pug is an awesome apartment dog. As puppies there are slightly rowdy but not for long. THey have the cute pushed in nose and curly tails and too much skin to ever grow into. They are very cuddly and love to be loved on. They are a little difficult to house train but they just need alot of patience when training. They usually don't get over twenty pounds so most pet taking apartments will accept the breed. They have wonderful personalities and are pretty easy going.

A Japenese Chin, they are very cat like and quiet. If you really want a Cavy without the price tag, I highly suggest you go to petfinder.com or look up CKCS Rescue and adopt one! You get a dog already housebroken, already spayed, know everything about it, and at a lesser cost!
I personally breed Mini Dachshunds, they are a nice apartment dog and in your weight range, they can be trained to be quiet if you get one that likes to bark.. But remember dogs are dogs, just because a breed is supposed to be a quiet one, you might still get a barker.. All of my dogs know to be quiet when I say "HUSH!" Just keep doing your research, I'm sure you'll find something perfect!

If you really want a Cavalier, you can find a "pet quality" Cavalier (in other words, one not eligible for show or breeding) for under $1,000. My first Cavalier came from Canada, is registered with the CKC, but was not eligible for show due to a break in his face mask (a streak of white in his mask that would work against him in competition). I bought him for $800. My second Cavalier came from a breeder in northern Minnesota who had both the male and female and bred a litter who were home raised. She is the most loving dog I have ever known (and I've had dogs for over 50 years), and she also cost $800.

Look on the internet under "cavalier king charles" and "pet quality" and you'll find breeders willling to sell at a lower fee. They're great dogs--you should get the breed you want, or you might regret settling for something else!

Well those spaniels are larger than 6-12 pounds. Try a Pug they are small , come in the same colors as the King Charles and have that cute pushed in nose.

A Pug!! Or a Puggle (pug-poodle mix). They're sweet dogs and good for apartment living.

Edit: My bad..a Puggle is a pug-beagle mix....... Still a sweet dog but not as cuddly as a pug-poodle mix.

Is the "somewhat pushed in nose" compulsory?! Visit a pound, you may find what you're looking for there
