compulsive behavior is usually corrected by substitution-replace annoying behavior with something more acceptable. Try using a "worry stone" a small smooth rock drill hole in it put it on a short chain. Instead of cracking knuckles take stone and rub it with thumb & index finger and then think of something pleasent like fishing, hiking, golf or being at a favorite vacation site. Good Luck

Ok this is a tough one. I used to take medication that caused it, but I've always had this problem. I would warn you though that when one habit goes away another on usually developes.
Okay, here's the skinny- willpower has everything to do with it. When you notice you are about to crack your knuckles, you have two options. You probably think, "MM that would feel good." You must condition yourself to think about a gruesome aspect of this, like "what if my nuckles swelled up immediately" something to turn you off of that habit that would give you almost a sense of fear about doing the act. When you think of the habit as a risky behavior you tend to avoid it, such as smoking for example. I'm a smoker, so I know that when you try to quit, you either accept the risk and give in, or you avoid cigarretes like the plague because you realize that someday they will have dangerously adverse affect. Same with this. Just imagine the negative effects of cracking you're knuckles everytime you do it.

Second option- do the habit in a place where it is really embarrassing, dinner table, before making love, something that will remind you of how dorky you looked doing it and you will start to have an embarrased feeling every time you do it...again I've tryed that with smoking and sometimes it just puts a guilt trip on you, but in the long run it may work.

replace them with more useful ones - suggestion become a massage therapist -

Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

Trade your habit in for another, such as a stress ball, keep it with you at all times, maybe in your pocket and when you feel the urge to crack your knuckles or wrists you can take it out and bounce it or squeze it,anything to distract you from cracking. I find that a stress ball is helpfull when im at places where i cant smoke.

Old habits die hard. That was a good question but for something like that it takes mind over matter. You need to have a strong mind. I know because I have had the same problem before as well. I use to have a problem of shaking my head. I finally stopped when I was sick and tired of people asking me why are you shaking your head so much.It just takes practice. Try involving your hands in other activities where your hands wont be idle. I hope this helps

You better stop that. Have you ever seen anyone with Arthritis in their joints, well its very painfull and if you do not stop cracking your joints that way, you are apt to weaken them and Arthritis may set in.

Ahhh, a little flea powder will take care of your problem. Maybe you should sprinkle in them dirty hippies hair while punching them. LMFAO
