TRAIN YOUR DOG IN A DAY OR TWO!
All animals (including humans) respond best to positive reinforcement. Spanking or rubbing noses in the mess will only serve to harm your dog, so avoid that! The best thing to do is wait for a special day when you can be free to be home and spend the day with your dog.
Get a leash and fill your pocket with a handful of special treats your dog really loves and then take your dog outside for a 10-minute walk about once every two hours, and also immediately following a meal.
AS SOON as your dog squats to do his business, immediately follow that up with a treat and lots of "Good Dog"s and nice petting. Repeat this throughout the day. If your dog has an accident in the house, simply say "NO" in a firm and low tone of voice, but don't do anything else to him. During the training process, when you and your dog are in the house, do not pet or love on him. Only show him affection when he does the right thing, but be sure to do it right away. Ddon't wait until he's completely finished going potty to reward him, or he may not make the connection.
For night time, your dog should be kept in a crate, just big enough for him to stand upright and turn around in (no bigger), which is lined with soft towels or a blanket. Dogs tend not to pee where they sleep, but you MUST take your dog out early in the morning for his morning business (keep treats handy)! After a week or so of sleeping in the crate and pottying him early in the morning you can try leaving him out of his crate at night. If he has an accident at night, put him back in for another week.
Dogs SHOULD NOT be kept in a crate all day long! Not only is it cruel, but they will not learn how to potty train properly this way. Your goal should be getting your dog to look forward to pottying outside. He will become enthusiastic about doing so if he knows he will get treats and love for doing it, and that he will only get scolded and no treats if he does his business inside.
You do not have to keep up the treats indefinately, you will only use them until he learns his new skill, and then just the petting and "Good Boy" is all he will need.
Good luck!! :)

crate the dog, take it out within 15 minutes of eating, stay out with the dog until it does its nature thing, then praise the dog, give a treat. Look for signs like walking back and forth, circling, and strange movements by the dog, something different than normal for the dog. Sometimes they will go by the door, make sounds but not all the time. You need to get the dog out on a regular schedule, this is not saying that once in a while they will have an accident in the house, don't get upset, clean it up, and deal with it.

I will say to let him out as much as possible and be outside for awhile. Watch when you feed and water him. Wait about 20 mins then let him out. Had the same problem with the dog i am fostering, 5 mos. old. Get him on a set schedule. Also lots of play time outside.

Go back to step one of house training. Be diligent and consistent. If you leave the dog home uncrated, get a crate as the dog will learn to hold its needs rather than mess his space up. Watch for signs that your dog needs to go when you are home. At the first sign take him outside and raise lots of happy praises when he does good outside.

Yes Crate him again. This will help alot. As soon as he gets out of the crate... take him directly outside. Let him go... the praise him, and take him inside.DO NOT let your dog play outside when he is on a bathroom break. Not to say he cannot play, but make bathroom breaks... a single and sole purpose of going outside.
Also... put a bell on your door... ring it every time you go outside to go to the bathroom... your dog will quickly learn that this means go outside... and will start ringing it himself.... and this also makes sure that you are not missing your pets signals..
Try the best you can to remove carpet, or ordors in spots that your dog has peed frequently in.
At a year old - this is going to be a harder habit to break, so I think the success will depend on your dilligence. Best of luck!

1. Use a crate and make him eat and sleep in the crate.
2. Take him out on a schedule and praise him / give him treats when he does it outside.
3. If the above doesnt work over the course of around 2 weeks, take him to the vet, it might be a medical problem!!
*Rubbing nose in poo doesn't work long term.
*Yelling / spanking doens't work long term it will only make the dog not do it in front of you.

NEVER SPANK YOUR DOG
NEVER RUB YOUR DOGS NOSE IN HIS MESS
NEVER FEED AND WATER YOUR DOG IN HIS CRATE.
YOU SHOULD CRATE YOUR DOG WHEN YOU ARE ASLEEP AND NOT AT HOME.
WHEN YOU ARE AT HOME YOU NEED TO WATCH THE DOG AT ALL TIMES.
IF YOU SEE HIM SNIFFING TAKE HIM OUTSIDE.
WHEN HE DOES HIS BUSINESS OUTSIDE PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE. GOOD DOG GOOD POTTY
IF HE HAS AN ACCIDENT AND ONLY IF YOU CATCH HIM IN THE ACT FIRMLY SAY NO AND IMMEDIATELY TAKE HIM OUTSIDE TO FINISH HIS BUSINESS. WHEN HE FINISHES HIS BUSINESS PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE.
REMEMBER A DOGS SHORT TERM MEMORY IS ONLY ABOUT 3 SECONDS SO IF YOU FIND A MESS YOU CANNOT PUNISH THE DOG FOR IT BECAUSE HE WONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PUNISHING HIM FOR.
CONSISTENCY IS THE KEY. DO EVERYTHING THE SAME EVERY TIME. EVENTUALLY HE WILL LEARN.
