OK...here's the situation. There is a "C" note riding on it. My cousin, who has always come across as a religious nut, recently told me that his neighbor, one John Pope is getting married. I have argued with him that a Pope cannot get married....who is right??

Big difference between:
"A Pope" and
"THE Pope"!

Could just be some regular schmuck who's last name is "Pope"

As for THE Pope: I would guess that the MAN can do anything he wants to do
HOWEVER...
There are some things that he can not do while he holds the OFFICE.

If The Pope wanted to get married he would first have to resign as Pope and rescind his priestly vows (de-frock himself.)

You would then have a (former) Pope who got married.

Is your cousin's neighbor Catholic? Baptist Popes or Non-denominational Popes may have different rules.

Actually, there is a possiblity that a Catholic Pope (as in leader of the Catholic Church) could be a married man. The only requirements to be a Pope in the Catholic Church is that a person must be Catholic and a male. There has been a Pope that were not a member of the clergy before they were elected.

Of course the odds of a non-clergy ever being elected Pope are so remote that it would be a fool's bet.

If your cousin's neighbor is named "John Pope," sure a "Pope" can get married. Unless of course Mr. Pope is trying to marry another man in most states. However, there is no "rule" stating that the Pope(ie. head of Catholic Church) has to be a priest. So, the head of the Catholic Church, can be married.

Look, when will you learn that rules were destined to be broken when the dollar signs are astronomical. The pope is just as sexually inclined as we all are, and he isn't going to run from the female who's the cream of the crop, especially if she's naked and especially if the pope is all alone in subtle privacy with her, and if he doesn't make his move than he definitely is not human. Oh, and I meant no disrespect to the pope, I only tell it like it ought to be told and say it (write it) like it ought to be said. Let us all remember for those of you who even care, about Marilyn Monroe and how she got the total attention of the Kennedy clan, robert and john, and there is a rumor over what happened with that mess.

You're both right. Someone named, let's say, John Pope can get married once John Pope isn't THE POPE (the leader of the catholic church). THE POPE CAN get married but if he does he ceases to be THE POPE.

John Pope, Jill Pope, Jack Pope, or Jane Pope can get married. Pope is their surname.

Pope Benedict XVI cannot get married. He made a vow of celibacy.

With love in Christ.

Catholic priests take a vow of chastity and celibacy, which means that they cannot (should not) have sex or get married. Since Popes are Catholic priests, the answer is no, a Pope cannot be married (although, if you research history, some Popes in the Church's past have married though it was contrary to their vows)...BUT if your name is "Pope" and you're not a priest, then you can get married.

There was a Pope in the US soccer team... if a Pope plays football, of course he could get married. Not so the Bishop of Rome...

A member of the Catholic clergy cannot get married, but there is no restriction on marriage for people with the last name Pope. Your friend wins.

The Pope can't get married. Anyone else that is named "Pope" can. Of course, the Pope in his infinite wisdom could make marriage ok for the clergy....
