These two countries are totally different, but both of them are great!!! Bangkok indeed is cheaper than HK, no matter in terms of hotel rates and living expenses. Spa there is very popular and cheap; this place get some great food as well.
Hong Kong is a shopping and food paradise. Also the night view is execellent!!! May be you go to Bangkok first, if you like beaches, you can take the domestic freight to other parts of Thailand. After saving more money, then you go to Hong Kong. What do you think???

It depends on how you enjoy a trip.
If you'll like cheap thing for shopping, Bangkok is better. Many Hong Kong people also go there.
Yet, if you would explore the special eastern+western culture, as well as beautiful scenes and high-quality services, I believe Hong Kong is the best. Besides shopping , you can also have a trip on countryside and take beautiful photographs. I enjoy this very much.

Hi, how many days do you have to do your holiday? When is your intended period to travel?
Both countries have their merits, and being on holiday, boths are just as good. Just that what you can do varies much between them.
Wonder if you can make a trip to Hong Kong with a stopover in Bangkok. Then you can get the best of the 2 places.
Hong Kong is quite a modern city. Its skyline has been popular all these years, and they are still adding to it. A visit to Victoria Peak will be a must, in the late afternoon and night, to enjoy the skyline and the night lights display over the city. Plus it is cool atthe peak and with a nice restaurant to tuck in.
Over in Lantau Island, is where the Big Buddha Temple sits, and more recently, accommpanied by Mickey and minnie from Disneyland.
Shopping in Hong Kong will be good from Jul to Aug as their Great Sale comes online. You get fabulous discounts especially on designer brands and wears. Otherwise, usual stroll through the various night markets for cheap buys are always possible. There are quite a number of malls, all easily connected by their train service.
Ocean Park is like Sea World, will be a nice escape. Other places will be the typical beach sights etc.
Food, must will be the dim sum and seafood. Place is known for its exquisite flavor.
As for Bangkok, take a river cruise, it is a nice experience. Take a visit to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market to see life along the river. Visit the Aprime Thai Cultural and Elephant show. See the Grand Palace and the Emerald Temple. Nearby is Wat Po, also a good visit to see one of the largest reclining statue of Buddha. If you like a massage, Wat Po is where the centre is. You can even get lessons from there. Make enquiry if you like.
As for shops, there are quite a number strung along Ploenchit Road and Sukhumvit Road. Suan Luum Night BAzaar will be around for a bit more before giving way to redevelopment. Plus the night markets along Silom and Sukhumvit Roads. Wholesale centre at Pratunam for clothes, BoBae Market too.
If you are there over a weekend, then the popular Chatuchak Weekend Market is a must to experience.
Any more tips, you can email me at thaitourinfo@yahoo.com.
Happy planning.

Visited both in Oct. 06 and don't think you can go wrong with either. Staying in Hong Kong can be very pricey, but the shopping and goods are incredible.
Bangkok has a lot more history to explore, great shopping, friendly to westerners and would probably be a much better value.

It is more OK for a first-timer to visit Asia by going to the Philippines, because there is no culture-shock, the Filipinos' culture being Westernized. Also, most of the people who have visited Hong Kong, Bangkok, or Manila said that if ever they would return, they'd definitely pick Manila! (see Yahoo! Travel).
