I'm already at a healthy weight and fitness level. Just curious.

Hmm that's a pretty good question, actually. You probably don't want to burn far too many calories or else your body will have nothing else to run on. Don't work out so hard that you injure yourself either. Listen to your body... if your muscles are telling you they can't take it anymore, you need to stop. I'm sure you could do some high intensity work outs for up to 2 hours and be okay, but your body knows what it can take and if you just pay attention to it you'll know how much is enough.

Safe? An odd question. There really is no maximum. In season, I do as much as 20 hours a week.

I do have to be a bit careful about the mix of aerobic vs. anaerobic, and watch out for overuse of certain body parts, but if I kept it at a low aerobic level and could afford the time, I'm pretty sure I could go almost continuously, except for a LOT of eating and a LOT of sleeping.
