I work in a tattoo parlour and we have at least one 'flopper' a week. The main reason people pass out is a mix of two things. The first thing is that people do not take our 'eat beforehand' advice to heart. you NEED the sugar in your system. The other reason is because people get hyped about tattoos, weather it be they're excited or scared. This causes their adrenaline to start pumping really rapidly..It helps because it releases hormones that help numb the skin. Once this happens, they begin to relax, and their adrenaline starts to slow down. The problem is that some people's adrenaline dips down really fast, which is what causes them to get light headed and/or pass out. You're body cannot handle such a huge hormone change so fast. Eating before hand, and bringing a soda helps your bodys sugar stay at a good level, or at least handle the situation better. Basically, to make a long story short, you get too excited, adrenaline pumps, then adrenaline stops, sugar drops, person drops.
Hope this helps a lil bit!!

You aren't supposed to consume alcohol before getting a tattoo anyway and reputable artists won't/shouldn't work on people under the influence.
The reason some people pass out can be a number of things. Usually its suggested to eat a decent sized meal about 2 hours before getting ink so that you aren't weak and that your blood sugar isn't too low. Some people concentrate too hard on the pain and do forget to breathe, so the short shallow breaths they take do cause them to get light headed. And for some people the pain is just too much and their bodys reaction is to shut down for a bit. I've seen people who pass out even after piercings and that just a quick procedure.
Everyone is different and even the toughest of people can have troubles. Just eat something before hand and if you start to feel dizzy, light headed or sick during the tattoo session, ask for a break and grab something small to eat or drink.

I would say because of the pain, in some cases. I have to admit, with the one on my lower back I got a little light-headed at times. It was the most painful thing I've ever had done. Some women giving birth pass out from the pain, so it makes sense. EDIT: Just because they have had tattoos before means nothing. Certain ones hurt worse on different places on the body. I know people who are covered in tattoos and they will tell you that a particular one hurt like hell, and that they barely felt another on a diff. part of their body.

It really has nothing to with how big you are. I just got a tattoo on Friday and know exactly what you are talking about. I was doing fine and suddenly I get woozy. The artist got me a cup of skittles to eat and then I was fine. It has something to do with your blood sugar. It makes it rise or fall. That is why you are supposed to go get a tattoo on a full stomach.

They might have a low tolerance for pain or afraid of needles! Sometimes the person might not have had enogh sleep the night before or didn't eat. Tattooing actually takes alot out of the body. the body is trying to fight at the same time while trying to stay alert! So make sure you get your rest and eat well before going your body needs sugar to stay up!

I think a lot of people psych themselves out and freak out. I had a friend who kept holding her breath, she almost passed out and the tattoo guy had to keep stopping so she's exhale. She damn near passed out.

It's probably different for everyone, but I think that it's probable that they might be afraid of needles, or else hear stories about tattoos hurting so much that they're nervous and scared. Whatever it is, I bet that it's psychological.

It is related to a loss of flow of blood to the brain, which probably explains why they are getting a tattoo in the first place.
