Hey Dakotas Mom,

See software sites below, I use Family Tree Maker, and it includes some free time to get family trees from Genealogy.com when you buy it. Others swear that Rootsmagic is better.

As far as sites that are good, there are so many. I included some here for you. Family Search, LDS, is great. Ellis Island is great, ancestry.com will cost but is good, and so many more. Don't overlook getting Birth, Marriage, and Death records (BMD) to prove your connections.

When you get hung up, come back and ask more questions, lots of people here to help you.

Unless you are born to the Gandhis or to the Kennedys I am afraid the Web will not be knowing more than what you already know about your family. However if you let out in this site all that you know about your family tree I am sure you would discover some new cousins and nieces etc. It would then depend on how well you use your new contacts to develop your information base.

Also County websites, state websites, and your local public library will often have a genealogy branch or the www.familysearch.org. local Family History centers ran by the Morman Church and open to everyone.
Best software is always Family Tree Maker, there are cheaper programs available and www.familysearch.org offers a FREE PAF program.
