I'm writing a paper on body image and I would like to know if you are a female over 25 who has a bmi of 22, 23, 24 and even 25? Do you think you look fat or do people say you should lose weight. The ideal bmi for women is 20-21, but under 25 is not overweight but perhaps looks so in our culture, this is the reason I am asking... thanks

I have a BMI of 22 and although I don't think I'm thin, I don't think I'm fat, just average really.

Also, there is no ideal BMI. You can be a female with a BMI of 20 and have 22% body fat or you can have a BMI of 20 with 32% body fat. Body fat percentage is more important than actual weight.

HTH : )

The BMI is a junk measurement. Anyone who is muscular will have a BMI that rates them badly. Tom Cruise is rated as obese using the BMI, but he's only like 1% body fat. The reason this is, is because muscle weights more then fat. 1 pound of muscle shows up a lot less then 1 pound of fat.

BMI's does not take into account muscle tone.
That's why the chart has different shades of green, yellow and reds.
A more accurate test would be a body fat percentage test.
The low 20 range is the normal body weight range for people. If you are at that weight but don't have muscle tone. Peope will tend to interpet that as being fat. Therefore make you think you are fat.

All through my youth my BMI was between 15-18 and obviously, people always told me I needed to gain weight (which I probably did, but couldn't because of my metabolism). I'm 49 now and my BMI is somewhere around 23 (middle age spread), but people still tell me I'm thin...but I don't think so. So I think it's all in perspective. I'm 5'9" by the way, and height has a lot to do with the perspective.

My BMI used to be 25-26. I lost 30lbs and it's 19.5 - 20 now. I WAS fat when my BMI was 25-26. I feel great about myself now.

The BMI is a load of crap.

The more athletic you are, the more muscle mass you have, the more muscle mass you have the more you weigh, the more you weigh the higher your BMI.

looks are now in the eyes of the beholder. The body image now these days get's ruined with the fiction on the TV ADS on how a woman should look like these days.
