Don't put weight on your fistula, like a purse. Don't wear watches or bracelets on that arm. Exercise it regularly by squeezing a ball for a forearm fistula or lifting light weights for an upper arm fistula. Don't wear tight clothing. At the end of your treatment, hold your needle sites instead of using clamps. Get an annual (at least) fistulagram, and quarterly access studies to measure the access blood flow. Also, ask your facility if you are a candidate for the button-hole technique (for needle cannulation). Don't have any blood pressures taken on that arm and don't have any blood taken from that arm, or IVs placed there either.
