I am not a vet however i have done A LOT of research on pet foods. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. Vets are great for fixing injuries and finding out what ails your pet but they really do not know that much about the foods available. They usually recommend the food that their sales people tell them is good. Not only that sales people wine, dine and gift vets (doctors) and human nature being what it is if someone gives you a great gift you try to sell his product.

I'm not a veterinarian, but here's the best food I've found so far. Innova. It's holistic, a high protein diet. It's more expensive than Iams or Eukanuba, but the dog will eat less and produce less waste. They'll also shed less. It's about $45 for a 40 lb bag. VERY good quality food!

Veterinarians(most anyway) are the last people to ask about today's nutritional values when it comes to available dog foods. Vets take on average an 8 week course on nutrition when getting their education. Most vets recommend Science Diet.If you read the label of Science Diet you will see low meat content, lots of fillers and even known cancer causing agents. A great tool to use to learn about what to look for in a dog food is www..dogfoodanalysis.com The site is put together by an educated group of pet owners who have researched dogfood in depth. It is a great tool. You need to use it as such. Good luck

The best dog food for your dog is not going to be the best dog food for every dog. The best dog food for your dog is one that is:
1) nutritionally complete and balanced (this is most dog foods on the market, look for an AAFCO statement on the bag; stay away from Dad's and Ol' Roy)
2) yummy to your dog
3) easy on the stomach - does not cause gastrointestinal upset or allergies in your dog
3) affordable to you
I do not recommend to feed raw food diets AT ALL. Would you eat raw foods? Then why feed them to your dog? Raw foods are frequently contaminated with Salmonella, E. Coli, and other bacteria. These can make your dog sick from eating them, and make you sick from handling them!

Puppy food actually isn't very good for puppies.
Explanation as to why puppy food is BAD for puppies, especially large breed pups: It contains WAY MORE protein than needed. It causes rapid growth, rapid growth then leads to future bone and joint problems. Feeding a high quality all stages food will promote a more desired slow growth, and thus lessen the chances of bone and joint problems later. Puppies should grow up slowly, not spring up like weeds.
In my opinion "puppy" foods should only be fed to pregnant and lactating dogs who actually can use all that extra protein and calcium.
Nothing you find at a grocery store is going to be a good food. High quality foods can be found at large pet store chains, or online. A couple of foods I like are Nutro Natural, Innova, Innova Evo and Cannidae.
There are other high quality dog foods. Here's how to spot them:
A high quality food will have little or no fillers such as corn, wheat or soy. These aren't very digestable for dogs, and are common food related allergens. Since you were seeing corn meal in the first few ingredients, those are not high quality foods. Foods list ingredients by content, with the ingredient it contains most of at the top.
A high quality food will not contain BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin, these are all chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer.
A high quality food will not contain by-products of any kind. Meat meals are ok as long as the source of the meat is listed, such as Chicken Meal.
A high quality diet should have meat as at least the first ingredient., and be made from human grade ingredients. Foods that don't use human grade ingredients often get their ingredients from less than desirable sources, such as meat from animals that were diseased, or euthanized.
There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

Vets are good choices for medical advice, not good choices for nutritional advice.

I use Natural Balance....don't buy IAMS or Eukenuba (which is made by IAMS). They conduct experiments on dogs/puppies/kittens for their food...VERY inhumane company. Ask YOUR vet which is the best food, you'll get a lot of different repsonses from people on here. Your vet knows your dog and will be able to give better advice.
