I have a pot of about 40 cm diameter. If this is full, do you reckon it'll be enough?

WOW! That's a lot of hungry mouths to feed. Sounds like you need more pots. Or is everyone going to eat very little. You'll need a pot "at least 20 inches" high and with the diameter you provided which would roughly be 16 inches. Good luck. Sounds like you really need more pots though.

I think you will need more than one pot. I would suggest cooking it in a few large pots. It will be easier to cook and such a large pan of sauce may burn on the bottom before it has heated all the way through. I would think that you need at least 1oz of beef per child and 2-3oz per adult. That's about 3kgs of meat!

That one pot won't be enough. Maybe four of them. Each pot would have to serve 20 people.that way.
