Well religion typically fires the same neurotransmitters and spurs the same chemical reactions in the brain that romantic/sexual love does. So they really do feel that same sort of irrational love and devotion to their delusions.
Indeed some anthropologists have postulated that religion came as an unfortunate by-product from the evolution of love mixed with childish teleology where everything must have an intention.

No, because when we say God is love, we are using the word "love" as a noun, not a verb.
Response to your edit: Yeah, you got me there. I suppose techincally you could extend the metaphor and say you have a tremendous amount of God for your children; except I've never heard anyone say that.
And I agree with Uncle Thesis that it's nothing more than personification or a metaphor. IMHO it's no different from saying "It's raining cats and dogs" or "You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you kiss a prince." No one expects that women are literally going to kiss slimy green amphibians before kissing a member of a royal family, or that canines and felines are actually falling from the sky.
Oh, and Christians aren't the only ones who say God is love. Jews say it too!

Too funny the way you get on on mock God. But, He will get over it. Will you?
Yes, God is love, everything He does and is, is because He is love. Even when ppl go to hell, He loves them. He lets each of us make our own choices, and then we either reap some way kool rewards, HEAVEN, or suffer the consequences of hell. He has to do it, as ppl that reject Him leave Him no choice. God wants us all to have a place where there is no more sin, no sickness, sorrow or pain. If we as Christians get this place, called Heaven, how could it stay Heaven, if God let all the others in that were doing all the same crud in heaven that they do on earth. ( refusing to know God, believe, obey....) Heaven woldnt be heaven long. So, God has given us the Bible, to read it. Not His fault if we dont. Its full of warnings for each of us. and pretty well details it all. Obedience leads to blessings, disobedience leads to curse. SO, once we make our choice to not believe and disobey, why do so many blame God for their life being a mess? Even now as Christians, we get so much yuk in our lives from the ppl that arent Christians that bring all the yukk to everyone else. Example, what about the lovely Christian wife, that has such incredible pain when she finds out her husband is cheating on her? Then theres the divorce, and all the pain, even to the kids. IEven tho, he was the only one rebelling, all are in pain. Life will be this way, till Jesus comes, cuz there is still sin here, and sinful ppl. But, in heaven, it wont be. Only joy, love peace and paradise forever and ever with Jesus. Nothing is worth losing that for. NOTHING. You cant God your children, but you cam ;pve tje,as God loves them , unconditionally. Yes, God is love, its what He is all about. and wants that for all of us. Why cant we all just want that too? God loves you too, I pray He is able to reveal that to you soon.

God is also a nurturing Father. Love is a description of God. God created all forms of love, from nurturing, unconditional, friendship, romantic, passionate & sexual love. So?
But God is more that Love. So, we also cannot love our children more than God does. Parents should look at Father God as an example of how to love our children. Read the http://fathersloveletter.com .

The essence of Love is derived from God. This is the true love, known as Agape.
Even those who don't believe can't help but agree that Love has been taken out of context and misued to the point that one might say that they are a loving slavemaster. Agape love is the true essence of what Love is supposed to be. It is self-sacrificing, humbling, satisfactory, and unlimiting love that God showed us by sending Jesus to die for our sins. That's how love is to be. the love between parent and child, husband and wife, siblings, and neighors.
By using it the way you do is limiting the view of love. So yes, God is love because he represents all of that and he can't be tainted by people's misuse of the phrase.

He said that of Himself through John in 1John 4:8. It's one of the many attributes of God that simply describe Who and what He is. He IS love, He Is life, He is light, truth.
Yes, you can God your child if you raise that child in the Love that is the God kind of love which is Agape. The love that is described in 1 Corinthians 13.
Jesus is this Love made flesh, this God made flesh. Ask Him into your heart and you'll find out what true love is.

They just say that because they believe all love comes from God. It's actually a ridiculous and hurtful thing to say when you stop and think about it. To say "God is the source of love" is to deny human love, love between people. It makes love cheaper, more arbitrary and less personal and caring. Humans beings themselves are the source of love, and love between people is due to their own feelings, to take away their responsibility for this feeling and say that it depends on God is inhuman. To love someone purely with your heart and emotions is good, but to have to explain it away or want to take less responsibility for feeling and wanting that love is hurtful.

Have you ever heard of personification?
Poets use it all the time.
That is to say:
IF love was a person, the best example would be God.

I see what you mean. But no, even though they claim God is love, well he is also light.
Though you can give them light or love, it doesn't seem to turn into God for some reason...
