Powerpoint and Word are part of the MS office package. If you get the office package, then it will include it.

As I am sure you are already aware, older version of Windows come with word processing/office tools. Win XP, for example, came with the Word Perfect 12 package. It has settings which are supposed to convert the RTF documents to Word format, but that has not always worked for me, sometimes converting to Wordpad instead.

Vista is not a Suite of "Office" applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint Access, Publisher, Outlook etc,. All of those applications are part of Microsoft Office and come in various versions of "MS Office". Vista is simply the Operating System.

Some computers can be purchased with Microsoft Works (this "beginner" suite of applications includes a word processor, a database, and a spreadsheet program, but compatibility with other applications is extremely limited), which now usually includes Microsoft Word.

And different manufacturers will offer to sell you any of the different version of MS Office, that depending on how many of their applications you'd like to have, vary in cost from $149 to $350, while you're purchasing your computer, but it's strictly an extra-cost option.

No. Those are part of Office.
DON'T GET VISTA!!!!
Haven't you seen the problems all over the net?
Let me help you get started...
1) Third party drivers/applications are not allowed unless “approved” by Microsoft. Some of your favorite software won't run on Vista because the drivers have not been "approved" by Microsoft. This also means that the digital camera you just bought may not be "allowed" to connect to the PC.
2) ALL media copied thru Vista is SERIOUSLY degraded. The mp3s that you rip, are not allowed to be full quality. Same with DVD's.
3) Takes up too much of the already strained resources.
Personally, if XP ever goes out of support, I'm going Linux

Vista's an operating system, Powerpoint & Word are part of the MS Office suite, a different thing altogether.

Seriously, don't bother with Vista yet, I've done a lot of research (from being laid up with time on my hands) and from what I've discovered I certainly won't be entertaining it for at least a year.

If you want an excellent equivalent of the costly MS Office suite, download the free Open Office suite, it's virtually identical & fully compatible.

No, vista does not include Microsoft Office. However, if the package specifically says it contains it, just like some versions of XPS 210, it does. But usually you have to buy Office.

No, although you will almost certainly get the new flavour of Wordpad which can create and edit word style documents. They've got a new file format with the latest release of office and the new vista Wordpad is likely to be compatible with this.

Nope, you'd have to purchase Office '07.

Take my advice, stick to Windows XP or buy a Mac. Vista isn't worth the box it ships in. It's terribly slow, highly incompatible with existing software and just plain bloated.

Alan,

I haven't looked at the Vista offering yet, but in my previous experience, the applications you are referring to are separate products, distinct from the operating system such as the Vista. You'll have to pay extra to get them. I did -- on my previous two systems.
