To do some reality check with must of you:

When you hit the jackpot for the Lotto, assuming you are the only winner, and that you are smart enough to claim all the money in one pay (instead of the 20 years or so they also offer), you will get about 30 to 40% of the amount advertised.

To do an example, I live in Florida. The Lotto here is played twice a week. The regular jackpot is $3 million. If You win, and choose the full pay in one shot, your check (or wire transfer as is usually done) is going to be for approximately $1.2 million only, or 40% of the advertised jackpot.

Where did the 60% go? Well, the jackpot is an estimate, plus the interest for 20 years. If you choose it in one payment, you get no interest. And then you have to deduct taxes (the lottery does it for you). So at the end you only see about 40%.

So, based on that, if you are asking for a BIG jackpot that can actually make a difference in your life, you should win at least 20 millions, so you can collect about 8 millions.

With a small lotto, you are better off not using the money except to pay any pending loans and credit cards. The rest put it in the bank on CDs and Money Market (some investments too) and let it get big interests. You cannot quit your job, and only use the interest when you need extra money. Otherwise you will loose all the money in no time.

If is something big (20 to about 50 million) then you can quit your job, and maybe buy a store or something to produce, and probably invest some money in more dangerous things like stocks, or high risk (and also high interest) bank investments.

To me, a perfect jackpot would be around 80 million or more. Winning this by myself would mean I can collect about 30+ millions. With that, I can build my own house (that would be more like a fortress so I don’t worry about Florida Hurricanes and Tornadoes), I would buy an exotic sports car (probably a Lamborghini Gallardo) and make it Twin turbo (to have about 1000+ HP), buy a boat (nothing too big, just good to go fishing and sailing around to the Bahamas), and probably travel one or twice a year to a new place (with my Wife of course).

Lets not forget, I would help my family, probably open some accounts under my name and their name as well, and let them use the interest (can not touch capital).

And I would probably open some business, probably one for my wife, and one for myself (more likely a shop for upscale high performance sport cars as it is a good business here in South Florida).

And don’t forget, have a Lawyer (a good one) always handy, and some good insurance too as you will get lots of vultures around trying to get your money. For this purpose, I would probably exchange some millions into Euros and have them in a European bank as a backup.

Let’s wake up now… and go back to work… LOL

Buy a condo, furnishings, a car, and a whole new wardrobe.

Donate a large chunk of it to various charities and political organizations.

Save the rest.

I would moon my boss and tell him where he can shove this job. I would pay off all of my debts and then I would just have fun with the rest. I would also help my friends and family.
