There are certain Buddhist cults that make a virtue of extreme asceticism, just as certain Christian cults do.

Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD. has proven that Mindfulness meditation, Insight meditation and Loving-kindness meditation dissolves anger, hatred, impatience, anxiety, depression, and many other unwholesome, and harmful factors. He has also proven that these 3 Buddhist meditative practices greatly develop the Cognitive areas of the brain.
Meditation does improve memory, concentration and focus, and helps us to clearly see things, situations, and people as they really are, thus improving relationships, and life in general.
There is No evidence of Buddhist meditation, or buddhists practicing self-abusive meditation anywhere. Wherever you received your information, there is no sound evidence to back that up. Meditation has many, many benefits, not only bringing one a stable peace of mind, and Happiness. I am not offended by any of your comments, only sharing with you the facts.
Hope this has clarified the subject on meditation for you.

In the first sermon of The Buddha,"Dhammacakkapavattana Sutta(Discourse on Turning the Wheel of Dhamma); The Buddha starts the sermon with:"Dve'me bhikkhave antapabbajitena na sevitabba"
In English:
"These two extremes, bhikkhus, should not be followed by one who has gone forth from worldly life".
So did The Buddha begin his sermon.
What are the two extremes?
1.Indulgence in desirable sense pleasure, which is low, vulgar, unprofitable, practised by worldlings but not by noble persons.
2.Self-mortification,which is painful,ignoble and unprofitable.
Hope this helps.
Metta to all.

Buddha never teaches self-abusive meditation. He teaches the middle way- be balanced mentally and emotionally. He is against extremity. Those people who torture themselves are very much misguided and don't really understand what Buddha teaches.

For I who am a Christian , budhism is a stupid thought.Actually they don't have a God , because perhaps they all the same think somehow like hinduism that god is everything , even them.
I don't know what is happening in buddhism.
But don't be surprise and observ interesting things like this:
.
For e.g . a great Christian saint (Nifon) to whom Jesus talked and has shown up ,was very tempted by satan , because he received a grace from God.Satan talked to him and also has shown up and brought him even a mental trouble. The saint feasted .Then he said is better to eat and feast from not drinking water ..we would be called mad nowadays if we do so...the saint also used to hit himself when temptations from satan appeared . Today we would be called mad if we do so.The saint put on a chain around his body , so to remember the humility and so on ..we would be called mad if we do so.But today due to these saints ..our way to God is clearer and we know that we must be right and help the other and we obtain favourable things and attitude and love from God.But if someone is tempted by satan , we musn't judge him, why is he toturing himself ..maybe he strugles and he cannot find the path. We better give him a helping hand, 'cos a sinner shall never be higher rhen someone who struggles to defeat satan's tempations.
Freud also said that if we don't have sex etc we become istericall so on it results..So Freud would say that''go on..have sex..!''But who is Freud?Nobody. A sinner like the others.Well if we want to have sex this is satan's idea and we will be histerical if we follow satan's will.'Cos we must have sex only if we love somebody..this meaning marriage, and marriage keeps us away from satan's temptations of sexuality.I mean loving somebody and having a sexual person with this person who is acctually your wife/husband.
More then that ..i think that someone could become histerical if he/she is not loved.Sex is nothing compared to love. And if they are loved they have sexual touch. Actually sexuallity means having the body of the beloved. But it turned even tousand years ago..into having apparently pleasant sensation with doesn't matter whom.
