Help! I am super desperate. I have a 1 year old Chow mix female. She was given to me as a puppy and was/is very hyperactive. She has always had a chewing habit despite the numerous chew toys she has. She has destroyed most of them. She is not aggressive and has never bitten anyone or barked at us. She has absolutely no food bowl aggression. She's just a stubborn girl.

She recently chewed up a young plum tree and reduced it from 6 ft. to 2 ft. She chewed through her leash one night. (We had to tie her up to prevent her from digging her way out under the chain link fence). We are about to receive some new trees and bushes any day now and we don't need her destroying our new landscape.

We have tried praising, scolding, rewards, playtime, brushing, treats, affection, etc. I am one phone call away from getting rid of her but I don't want to do that just yet. Any ideas, besides calling the Dog Whisperer?

My dog gets plenty of exercise. My husband and son play ball with her every day if weather permits. We have a huge yard so fetching a ball is not just a short trot for her. Seems like the more attention we show her she throws more tantrums. She chewed up the plum tree just hours after we were done playing with her. I have 3 kids who all take turns wearing her out. What more does she want?

I have a boxer/pit mix and when we first got her she chewed everything and anything. After part of a couch and misc. stuff (a cactus) later, we got her a kennel. I don't know if your dog is an inside dog but i would definitly get her one. If you do keep her outside, you should get her a run, (don't know what your budget is). She will grow out of it eventually, Daisy Mae is 2 now and she has calmed down a lot. Give it time, don't give her away. Just watch here closely for awhile. It'll get better, i promise

Try bitter apple and spray it on everything that she chews. Hopefully she won't like it and will eventually leave the items alone. Also, you mentioned play time...try taking her out more often, maybe she's in need of more excercise. Don't reward her when she chews on things, even if you think it will distract her for a while...she'll get the idea that it's ok to do this if she's given toys or treats after she does it..

If your dog is destructive then it means the dog has too much energy and not a productive outlet for it. It's your job as a person to provide that outlet. Letting the dog out in a yard or walking for 15 min is not going to cut it. Your description of your dog being 'hyperactive' simply means that dog has significant energy. Either get the dog into something that uses it's body and brains like flyball, frisbee, agility, etc. or go for long walks and use a backpack filled with water bottles to drain off the energy.
Your dog is simply doing for itself what you should be doing for it, finding an activity for that energy. Change the energy and you'll change the dog.

Have your tried talking to your veterinarian about your problem?? I would try talking to a vet or even going into petsmart or petco and ask them what they think. Maybe there's something that they can do. Good Luck...
I would definately recommend to call your vet or even take your dog in and just talk to your vet.
