I definitely agree with Boo Boo. Westside Rentals is the way to go. It costs money to register, but you will have a TON of rentals to choose from in the L.A. area.
I've actually seen people selling their Westside Rentals account info on craigslist for cheap after they've secured a place. Might want to check into that to save some $ if that's an issue.

you can try the recycler
Also try the LA weekly, the daily news and the LA times. However, as these cost money to advertise, you may not find many listings for the budget-minded landlord.
Also consider asking with some of the property management companies (except Bur-Cal, which stinks.)
Where are you looking to live? Maybe one of us knows of a vacancy or two,

for L.A. the best is westsiderentals.com honestly, sooo many of the apartments in L.A. are listed on westside rental, you might not even be able to look at the place unless you sign up with them. It costs money, i dont remember how much, but if you sign up then you and a friend can split the price or something. Happy house hunting

Try Apartments.com and Rent.com. Another thing to do is look in the classifieds section of the LA Times. Good Luck!
