Many years ago, few people knew how to read when religion was introduced to them. You can't give an illiterate person a Bible and tell them to read it or else they'll go to Hell.
Literacy is a relatively new phenomenon.
Anyway, I have to say that a lot of what I hear religion saying nowadays is not mouth-to-ear, but foot-in-mouth.
