A man, everyday for 50 years, slaughtered ten children each day in the most inhumane ways imaginable then one minute before dying asked Jesus to save him.

-or-

A man who simply did not believe in a higher power, but had good morals and lived his life the best way he could and never hurt anyone.

According to Scripture, if the first man were truly repentant, he would be saved just as the thief on the cross was.

The second man, who is depending on his own moral fortitude for salvation but rejects God, will not be able to buy his way into Heaven with charity donations and Boy Scout badges.

Your fate at death is not determined by some sort of cosmic scale of good deeds versus bad deeds. Rather, the price for your sin has already been paid of by God sacrificing his own Son to save us from a law that we could never keep, no matter how moral we may appear. The price has already been paid, no matter how terrible things the things you have done are. The only question remains is whether you are willing to accept it or not.

Personally, I just can't understand how anyone could walk away from love.

Neither, but it's deeper than one might think. Mainstream religions have the masses programmed to believe that good works/belief in Jesus are the key to eternal life in Heaven. However, the Bible does not list heavenly life as the reward for the good. It was not our originally intended place of dwelling. Mankind was made to reside on the Earth, and a number of scriptures support the notion that we will be resurrected to live here at a later period. The two men in your example, assuming both were sincere, would hopefully be resurrected on paradise earth as opposed to life in heaven.

Do you know such a man as the second?

It is a good thing that we don't decide who gets into heaven.

But - to answer your question - anyone who accepts the substitutionary death of Jesus Christ as their payment for sin will be in heaven - regardless of when they accepted.

Notice I did not say Christians, or anyone who says they are a Christian. Jesus' first recorded discourse indicated very clearly that there will be those who claim to follow Him, who believe they are following Him, who do the actions of a follower - simply are not His.

Option C: The Person who runs a local cafeteria down the road. He made the best darn coffee

Why? Because the other 2 choices are purely fictional.

The get to heaven you need to love the lord. It would not be possible to love the lord and murder children so he's out. You also do not get to heaven by your works but by the grace of God.

If there is a Heaven and a god and if he judges you to see where you get to go after you die - then judging on anything other than actions and character is barbaric.
