War means that we are expending huge amounts of this nation's critical resources to settle a dispute. In the case of Iraq, we are spending money that is needed in this country for our own infrastructure needs. The we spent the equivalent of what we are spending in Iraq and Afghanistan to create an alternative to foreign oil, we would have a solution in a short time. Other countries have done it (Brazil), and we can too. If we had no oil dependency, than the politics of the middle east, would not mean much to us. They would be left on their own to do whatever they could with their oil.
I understand that the government we currently have is oil friendly, and that the current oil distribution and refining system would be useless if we found a new source of energy, but it is the future and we are wasting all of our resources on an old technology that is dying.
Bring our troops home, and take these hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars and spend them on making America great again.

It is a tool used by politicians (not politics by other means as Clausewitz argued) to kill enough people and to seize enough real estate until the other party says "uncle." This is followed by a resumption of diplomacy until the next round is administered as necessary.
