In Bhagavad-gita(4.34), Lord Sri Krishna says,
Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the truth.

It is mentioned in Srimad Bhagavatam (11.3.21.22)
"Any person who is seriously desirous of achieving real happiness must seek out a bona fide spiritual master and take shelter of him by initiation. The qualification of a spiritual master is that he must have realized the conclusion of the scriptures by deliberation and arguments and thus be able to convince others of these conclusions. Such great personalities, who have taken complete shelter of the Supreme Godhead, leaving aside all material considerations, are to be understood as bona fide spiritual masters."

"Accepting the bona fide spiritual master as one's life and soul and worshipable deity, the disciple should learn from him the process of pure devotional service. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, the soul of all souls, is inclined to give Himself to His pure devotees. Therefore, the disciple should learn from the spiritual master to serve the Lord without duplicity and in such a faithful and favorable way that the Supreme Lord, being satisfied, will offer Himself to the faithful disciple."

Padma Purana says that there are four different paramparas(disciplic sucession) giving out the knowledge of God.
1. Sri Sampradaya -Sri Ramanuja,
2. Brahma Sampradaya - Sri Madhavacarya
3. Kumara Sampradaya - Sri Nimbarkacarya, and
4. Rudra Sampraddaya- Sri Visnuswami

One should accept only their teachings and accept a guru in one of those lines. One should not accept a self-manufactured guru.

The answer is with in your question it-self. One's own-self is his own Guru. As you said, if one fallows Dharma Marga (Righteous path) and lives a humble living there is no need for any guru.
