The only way it will be memorable is through the video, so do active things. Get some good sized push toys or other things the kids can manipulate - plastic cars, a doll stroller, any other roller toy. Feel free to edit the tape to include the highlights. Seeing a 1 year old sitting around and opening presents is fairly boring unless they're unusually playful about tossing around wrapping paper.
Include messy food like chocolate pudding. It's better video that way.
Don't be afraid to do it on the cheap. It's the action that will be memorable on the video, not the expensive clown or other entertainment you bring it (which will be completely unappreciated by the 1 year old anyway).

Most experts will say to keep the first bday party a little more low key with a smaller gathering of close family and friends. But that doesn't mean you can't make it really sweet and memorable!
Here are some tips:
* Keep the party short 1- 1/12 hours is about the
most a one year old can handle without getting over
stimulated and possibly cranky.
* Schedule around nap times. Late morning, allows for
a morning nap or late afternoon to allow for an
afternoon nap.
* Weekend parties usually work better for parents
and other adults.
* Most first birthday parties are for the adults in
your child's life (family and friends). Invite the most
special friends and relatives.
* Keep it to a manageable number of guests for you
and your space. Keep in mind, that you will be
caring for your little one at the same time.
* If you intend to invite other babies or toddlers
1- 3 guests is ideal with a maximum of 5.
* Parents of little ones should be included as guests
so they can assist their children and you if necessary.
* Although it is not necessary to provide a meal,
finger foods are always nice. Especially with babies.
* Check with ALL parents regarding food allergies and
safety. Keep packaging fun but safe.
* Be flexible!!!! All parents know that children and their
behaviors are not predictable. Un-scheduled rests,
tears, accidents etc. are to be expected at a baby's
first birthday. Just relax and go with the flow.
* To help you be flexible...arrange for help from a reliable
friend or family member who can watch your child or
entertain while you change a diaper, pick up a spill etc.
* If you plan on having children at the party keep plenty
of toys and activities available to keep them occupied.
* Baby-proof the party space.
REMEMBER - This is a day to celebrate the birth of your
child. Keep the party simple so you can do just that. Plan
some special quiet time at the end of the day just for Mom, Dad, and baby.
Baby Bottle Bowling - also a good baby shower game!
Fill Fill ten baby bottles with water or rice to make them more stable. Arrange the bottles on the floor like bowling pins.
Mark an "X" a reasonable distance from the "pins".
Players will take turns trying to get a strike using a ball.
Baby Monitor Madness
This is similar to a treasure hunt.
You'll need a a baby monitor that can travel some distance.
Before the party, write two lists of clues about areas or items from around your home - 5-10 object per list.
Hide a fun object or candy at each location.
Clue Example:
POP Too dark...POP Too light I never seem to get it right
(toaster)
To play: The teams start the game in different locations.
One team is assigned to the the transmitter and the other
will carry the receiver. The transmitter team has a list of clues. They read the clues through the monitor to the "receiver" team. They have only 1-2 minutes to solve the
clue and collect the object at that location before the next clue is read. When the clues have all been read, that round
is over. the teams switch and there is a new list of clues.
The team that solves the most clues wins!
Time Capsule -
Before the party decorate a coffee can, oatmeal or
tennis ball container. Provide pen and paper.
Encourage your family and friends to write special notes
for your child to read when they get older. Good topics are...
My hopes and dreams for you are...
How you've touched my life.
What I like about you.
I love you because...
Store the container to be opened at a later date.
At the same website where I found this info, there is a list of different party theme ideas to use from baby einstein to sesame street. Here is the address: http://www.amazingmoms.com/htm/party_babys_first_birthday.htm#first%20_birthday_themes

First Birthdays are Great So much you can do. I Make my kids a Birthday book every year have every one sign it draw a picture if it is a kid. My kids read theirs all the time.
I would kind of keep it simple no hoopla clowns or any of that.
You can have games for older kids or a puppet show Your little one would probably enjoy that to.
The most important thing is to make sure your little one has fun!!
I say don't do the clowns because we did my daughter freaked ruined the whole party.

One thing that is fun to do is buy a big piece of paper, like craft paper or something like that. When people start arriving at the party have everyone write a little something to him even the small kids. When he gets older he will love it.The same thing with your video camera,go around to everyone at the party and ask if there is anything that they would like to say.And then record him when he is playing with other kids and when he gets his cake and presents.Remember when he get older he will most likely want to watch the tape over and over again. If you wanted to you could make another copy and send it to friends or family form out of town, or to someone who can't make it to the party.Happy birthday to your son!!!

Make it simple - pick his favorite thing or character and go with that. Get him his own "messy cake" that he can dive into. Most grocery stores will give them for free if you purchase a regular cake from them and tell them it's for a 1st b-day.
Just have fun, and let him have fun! He's only 1, so there is no need for a bunch of games and stuff he won't understand anyway. Just make it a time of togetherness for family and friends to celebrate your son! It will be great!

the best way to make it a happy day for him is to not plan too much and only invite the people he knows and is close to. my son was unhappy when new people (even family) that he didnt know well were trying to pass him around. also, simple toys like balls that you know he likes that everyone can sit in a circle and play with. most importantly, he will love cake and a nap after a short hour or two party.
