Islamic history books tell about a battle called "Sareyat Al Fuls" where prophet Muhammed ordered his cousin (Ali Ibn Abu Talib) to lead a group of Muslims and go to conquer a neighbour village and destroy their temple.
The story says that the small army invaded the village, destroyed its temple, looted all valuables, and enslaved many women and men.
The story also tells that the Muslim army leader (Ali) asked his prisoners of war if they would submit to Islam. He saved the lives of those who submitted to Islam and KILLED those who refused to submit to Islam.

I wouldn't doubt it. It was the standard christian practice as well.
Either was more liberal than the Jewish practice according to the bible. There, since you could not convert, they just killed you outright.
