There are generally 4 types:

1. Photodiodes
2. Photovoltaics
3. Light dependant resistors
4. Charge coupled devices (CCDs)

Photodiodes produce current or voltage (depending on how they are biased) with respect to the amount of photons hitting the surface of the diode.

Photovoltaics (solar cells) produce electric power directly, depending on the amount of photons hitting the surface.

Light dependant resistors, change their resistance with respect to the amount of photons hitting the surface of the device.

CCDs produce charge proportional to the amount of light hitting the surface. There is usually an array of CCD elements, and the charges are moved from element to element and read at the end of the array (the charges are converted to voltage or current).
