I'm babysitting my friend's daughter, who is thirteen months. She's throwing what I think is a temper tantrum. She's thrashing all over the house crying for no reason. I am not used to this behavior because my own daughter does not throw tantrums and I've never babysat a child who did. My friend's and my parenting styles are very different, and I know she has the cry it out mentality. Is that what I should be doing with this tantrum? Are there any methods I can use to calm her down? The best I've heard so far is to ignore it, but it hasn't really gotten her to stop.

Try to find out what is wrong if you can with the limited language skills that she has. She may be able to point out what she wants if you show her that you are interested in seeing what is bothering her so much. You don't hear of 13 month olds having major tantrums too much. That usually comes a little later in life, so there could be something major going on in her life too. Life is quite confusing at that age I think. They're trying to figure a lot of things out. I think it could be stressful too for a little one because being that age is somewhat of a pivotal point in life. They just learned to walk and they're learning all kinds of new things.
But you should talk to your friend about what she thinks would be best for you to do since it is her daughter(ask her about beyond letting her cry it out). There may be something stressing the daughter out and she is just reacting the best way she knows how.

It's time to put the fear of God into this child. Either that or give her something to really cry about, the little bastard.
