Well first of all...do not try to leash break your chihuahua with a collar.....use a harness because you can damage their fragile little neck. If you dress your chi...some shirts have a hook on the back and you can connect a leash for easy training. Take your chi outside (on a warm day) and let her/him lead the way... never yell at your chi while leash training. When your chi is leading the way talk to he/she in a calm soothing voice...tell them things like good job and what a good dog...things like that! Soon your chi will know that walking on the leash is a fun thing not punishment! P.S.-never yank on the leash!

Attach the leash to the chihuahua's collar or harness and let them drag it around the house for a bit. Then when you do leave the house after the dog is used to the leash, make sure you are the first out the door. Keep the leash short and held slightly behind you (this will put the dog beside you where you want it). If the dog pulls forward, using an appropriate amount of force (you don't want to pull the dog off its feet), give a quick tug to the side (not backwards). Ideally your goal is to have the dog walk by your side. If the dog pulls backwards, you may be able to to use the tug to the side but you may need to go back to step one (leash on around the house) or use food to encourage the dog to move forward.

Yes, as stated above, dont use a collar--use a harness. My chi was pretty stubborn at first learning to walk on a leash but with time he came around. I just put his harness on and leash and we would only do it for a little bit each day. I didnt want him to come to hate it. And I NEVER dragged him--thats bad! Just leave some slack in the leash and your chi will think he's following you on his own as they do anyhow--mine is never more than 1 foot away from me at all times!! Just take it slow and you'll be fine! Good luck to you!!!

Watch the Dog Whisperer program on TV. That will give you a good idea. But you simply have to make sure that your dog recognizes you as the dominate one. Don't allow it to do anything that you don't want it to do. Once you have that kind of relationship, you can let the dog off the leash and be sure that you can control it with verbal commands.

When walking, keep leash held up short, until he stops pulling, and use treats when he does what you want him to. Keep him close to you and walk slowly, telling him slow, slow. A small quick jerk on the leash won't hurt, but you don't need to jerk him up off the ground neither. If you start getting mad, stop and start a little time afterward. Don't abuse him or he'll start to hate you, or become so scared he won't know what to do.

As a fellow owner of a Chihuahua, I will tell you to beware of using a collar, it is best to use a harness, if the dog jerks w/ a collar on, being that their bones are so fragile, it could cause their neck to snap. I recommend short walks around the yard first, and use lots of treats
