Hi,

I am looking for some genuine advice and tips on cutting down on the old booze. I have been drinking quite heavily for 5 straight years now. At the mo I have been drinking almost every night of the week which A: costly and B: not good for my health. I have been drinking almost 2 bottles of red wine a night. I have made the decision to only drink moderately at the weekends as it gets in the way of uni etc... But it is proving to be quite difficult. Does anyone have any tips for me to control that urge I have when I get home at night to open a bottle to have 1 glass which always turns into 7. Many tx.

Hey I would say you need to leave it alone altogether, but if this frightens you then you need to remove it and fill it's place with something else. For my husband it was Mt. Dews and he started messing with motorcycles when he got home, then our sons were old enough to play sports so now hes involved with that hes been sober for 7 years now. Hes alot happier for it and so am I. Just find something to replace it the better habits you have the better you'll feel!

The best way is to find a support group.
A lot of times there is no one around when you crave another drink. With the help of a support group they may be able to help you when you get those urges.
For me it was a matter of distraction. I basically replaced one obsession with another. I cut severly back on the drinking and now I go and work out during the night time instead of going to hit the alcohol.
Good Luck.

I have not had a drink for 16 months after years of heavy drinking. My life is better than I could have ever imagined. I feel 150% better! I go to AA meetings and have alot of cool new friends that don't drink either. Try AA, what have you got to lose? You have everything to gain. I know.

There is a reason you can't seem to cut down or quit altogether. I hate to tell you, but you're an alcoholic. Try quitting completely. If you find that you think about it all the time, try to have just 1 and it turns into 7, then that will prove it to you. You need help to stop. Please go to AA.

Once you realize that it has become a problem, that's half the battle. Unfortunately something bad has to happen to make you swear off the stuff. They call it hitting your bottom. AA only made me want to drink more, very depressing place. Threat of jail scared me straight.

Just asking here is a good step. It shows you are serious about it and recognize it as a problem.
Try AA. And talk to your doctor. There are drugs now that supposedly reduce alcohol craving. I don't how well they work in which situations, but talking to a good doctor should be some help.

Change your routine.

Could you be drinking to medicating some stress from work? If so, try doing some walking (1/2 to 1hr) after work to resolve some stress.

Replace the alcohol with water you will find that when you drink a lot of water you get a natural "buzz" because your body is being flushed out!

You needs to ask a person that has had the same problem.

No short cuts . Go to a AA meeting

you just have to keep it out of your house and don't hang with people that are drinking, try to hang around people that are non-drinkers. I wish you all the luck in quiting! there is someone really close to me that I wish would quit.
