its good to keep him on puppy chow till he is about a year old then you gradually introduce to adult food so that his body can get used to the change of the foods

Puppy chow isn't the best food to feed a pup or and adult dog.
Something with more vitamins would be better. Science diet
or something like that would be a good idea. I only buy my
food from a pet store, they don't have the same food that you
might find in a grocery store. Beleive me, it's better for both
of your dogs to be on a good food. Your pup could still use
puppy food. It's better for them to be on it for almost a year.

It's ok if he eats some of the adult food, but not to make a meal
out of it.

I would begin to switch your pup over to adult food (most vets recommend it at neutering age which would be 6 months), I would change it gradually 25% of dog chow to 75% puppy chow for 5 days, then 50% dog chow to 50% puppy chow for another 5 days then 75% dog chow to 25% puppy chow for another 5 days. I would definately stop give any milk, at 6 months of age he should be drinking water.

You should really try to keep your dog on puppy food until he's a year old. I try to add raw eggs to my dog's food on occasion, it helps give them a shiny coat & dogs love it! If your puppy prefers the other brand, there are some things you can do to help encourage him to eat his own food. You can add some oatmeal that's been soaked in a little bit or warm water. Dogs love oatmeal and it's good for their digestive tracts, my vet suggested this to me. Adding milk is also a good idea. Another thing I do quite frequently is to put the kibble in a food processor or blender. Add a little milk or water & they think they're getting a treat.

It's important to give the puppy the proper supplements they need supplied in puppy food for the first year. Once the beagle is a year old switch to adult dog food. They do a ton of growing in the first year so it's very important. You'll probably notice the amount of food is more for a puppy too. Again the amount of growing they do is why.

It is best to wait until your puppy is at least one year old to switch him to dog food. Puppy chow has vitamins and nutrients in it that aren't in dog food that your puppy needs right now. It won't hurt him, but a change in dog food could cause diarrhea.

You should try to keep him on the puppy food until he's about a year old. The puppy food has certain nutrients to help him grow and develop properly that isn't found in adult dog foods. When you do change him over make sure you do it gradually so you don't upset his stomach.

My vet told me Puppy food is important becuase it helps with the pups building blocks of life long nutrition/health. Plus puppy food is catered to a Active puppy and has an increase of nutrients/calories to keep p with puppys active life style, his fur... Feeding him Adult food isn't bad but he may be missing nutrients he needs in his puppy stages. I would wait a year before chaning him to Adult food.

I don't recommend puppy food for any puppy. See my reason below.

Purina anything isn't a very good food. I'd switch them both over to a high quality food.

Puppy food actually isn't very good for puppies.

Explanation as to why puppy food is BAD for puppies, especially large breed pups: It contains WAY MORE protein than needed. It causes rapid growth, rapid growth then leads to future bone and joint problems. Feeding a high quality all stages food will promote a more desired slow growth, and thus lessen the chances of bone and joint problems later. Puppies should grow up slowly, not spring up like weeds.

In my opinion "puppy" foods should only be fed to pregnant and lactating dogs who actually can use all that extra protein and calcium.

Nothing you find at a grocery store is going to be a good food. High quality foods can be found at large pet store chains, or online. A couple of foods I like are Nutro Natural, Innova, Innova Evo and Cannidae.

There are other high quality dog foods. Here's how to spot them:

A high quality food will have little or no fillers such as corn, wheat or soy. These aren't very digestable for dogs, and are common food related allergens. Since you were seeing corn meal in the first few ingredients, those are not high quality foods. Foods list ingredients by content, with the ingredient it contains most of at the top.

A high quality food will not contain BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin, these are all chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer.

A high quality food will not contain by-products of any kind. Meat meals are ok as long as the source of the meat is listed, such as Chicken Meal.

A high quality diet should have meat as at least the first ingredient., and be made from human grade ingredients. Foods that don't use human grade ingredients often get their ingredients from less than desirable sources, such as meat from animals that were diseased, or euthanized.

There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

No it's alright, but make sure he has good clean water also with it, or milk. Milk would be better for both dogs,it keeps bones strong. I give my dog a raw egg mixed in with his milk about twice a week. It makes his coat shinny and smooth.
