Spirituality is universal in application. Anybody, anywhere and anytime can practice spiritual life. It is not limited only to India, America, Japna or Africa etc...But, ordinary people are absorbed in materialistic life and don't have any knowledge of spiritual life.

Out of many thousands among men, one may endeavor for perfection, and of those who have achieved perfection, hardly one knows Me in truth. Bhagavad-gita (7.3),

A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada,

(International Society for Krishna Consciousness)
There are various grades of men, and out of many thousands, one may be sufficiently interested in transcendental realization to try to know what is the self, what is the body, and what is the Absolute Truth. Generally mankind is simply engaged in the animal propensities, namely eating, sleeping, defending and mating, and hardly anyone is interested in transcendental knowledge.

This is because being materialistic is a short term, much easier mode of existence, and because many people's imagination does not stretch above their waist line.

Unless you have already done so, read "Rational Spirituality" available on the Dhaxem website. This will also tell you, that statistically speaking, the majority of people are trial and error Souls, i.e. they do not follow the Divine path and they do not work towards eternal life. To these Souls/people, being materialistic is a natural way to be. Their existence is unlikely to span beyond their current matter.

"Rational Spirituality" is all-embracing and hence universal in meaning.

Materialism never took front seat, it never take in future even. Because, materialism is a basis of opportunism. As soon as they ask, god has to give. Or else, they doubt the existence of god and declare that there is no god and man is the master of his own fate. But, the same person doesn't know when he is going to die and why he is facing up and downs in life. If a man is master of his own fate, he can become Bill gates, Tata , Birla or Prime Minister of India. Why not he ?. Because some un-known force is not permitting him to be. That un-known force is called God, al-mighty, who is omni potent and omni present. To know him, first we have to believe him. Then we have to struggle, strive and seek him. No doubt ,he will appear. Try with belief. Swami Vivekananda, an atheist turned philosopher in the same way.

MAN ACQUIRES. KNOWLEDGE, WEALTH, POWER,SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING. These material acquisitions provides man his identity. When he starts distributing them to the humanity at large, the purpose of his existence carries a meaning and the material thing which you despised in your question transforms itself into to pervasive one.

Does every one do it? At lease to some extent. You pay your income tax honestly. you need not do any other dhartma, as part you earning goes to the humanity.

Be honest in your approach to society, your knowledge will deserve its social need.

Use your power for just reasons, your material achievement is human achievement.

When humanity lives, material achievement carries no stigma.
