Well,I think most of the answers were good ,but let me give you the categories of these greetings "a part of mymajor is teaching Arabic as a foreign language"
marhabba = hello "speacially in Levantine Arabic...dialects spoken in Lebanon,Syria,Palestine &Jordan"and the respond is marhabba ,also.
As salaam 'alaykom = "may peace be upon you " which is the ide spread hello allover the Arab countries . The ressbond would be : wa 'alaykom assalaam = "may peace be upon you too"
and the full sentence is used some times "for a resbond" which is wa 'alaykom assalaam wa rahmato allahi wa barakato = and may peace and forgiveness of Allah be upon you .
I suggest to stick to the last one any peson speaking any dialect "Arabic of course" would understand it because it could be fotmal or friendly :)
For (Ahlan wa sahlan ) = you are welcome and it's a formal way of greeting "not between friends".The respond could be (shokran) = thanks .
Hope it helps.
Hope

The most usual greeting is /Sabbahh el khair/, I can't get Arabic writing up, and it wouldn't do you much good anyhow. That essentially means "good day," and a nice reply might be a variation on that like /Sabbahh en nur/.
My personal favorite is /Sabbahh el yasmin/: Jasmine day.

Well, you can say "Marhaba" (MARR-hah-bah), but it is more common for people to greet one another with "Asalaamu aleykum" to which one responds, "Wa aleykum asalaam." (They're pronounced as they're written.)
