I have symptoms of hip bursitis, and I think it may be because I'm a runner, and my right leg is longer than the left. I plan to rest for a week, but is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again? I have lower back/hip stiffness on the right side, and pain in my outer thigh when I step forward. Can I use an insert of some kind?

I run about 13 miles a week (three days a week) and do yoga three days a week.

Go to a chiropractors office have them measure the length of both legs they will in turn hook you up with a shoe insert to even out your height equally and relieve stress on your backbone as this can lead to more severe problems of the back such as spinal curving. Good Luck Stay healthy.

As a former runner, 70 miles per week, I can feel your pain. I had one leg slightly loner than the other, 4mm. I believe everyone one has this feature as I know no one whose legs are the same lenght. I cut my pain back by running on the same side of the road as the longer leg. In your case the Right side of the road. Do not confine all running to the Right side, just a larger percentage.

Yoga may help to an extent, but try lots of stretching prior to your runs and after. Hamstring stretching is very important. Putting your heal on the kitchen counter, bending forward, knee straight, and touching your nose to your knee for 30 seconds shouldn't be a problem for you considering your yoga training. Don't forget to stretch those calves also.

Don'y give up your running as it's possibly the best weight control exercise there is.

Orthonics could help you. Remember, for a runner, a Podiatrist is better than a brain surgeon.

I have a similar problem, one of my legs is signifigantly longer then the other because of a hip injury, this in time led to a problem with my spine. I started going to a chiropractor and he straitend the whole thing out. Not only did my hip and back feel better but I also stopped having such frequent headaches. I suggest you try getting a referal from your doctor or look for one on your own if it's financially possible.

I used a tens machine at a sports and physical therapy clinic. Gave me a lot of pain relief. If you try it and it helps a doctor may prescribe one for you. If you do use one never place the contacts across a blood artery.
