Sure, there are plenty of lobsters in the sea. Problem is, they are in the sea. The other problem is they are a regulated industry ... only certain sizes can be taken, egg-bearing females must be released ... etc.
Hard to believe that once lobster was consider food for the poor. In colonial times, lobsters were considered "poverty food." They were harvested from tidal pools and served to children, to prisoners, and to indentured servants, who exchanged their passage to America for seven years of service to their sponsors. In Massachusetts, some of the servants finally rebelled. They had it put into their contracts that they would not be forced to eat lobster more than three times a week

Lobster fishing from a commercial stand point is very exspensive. Aside from also being dangerous for the boats a crew. Usually the weather is very cold because the season is from Nov. to May, Many hardships and dangers face the crew, Ice, winter storms, very long work shifts, ropes to get tangled in and pulled over board into icy water with 4' to 12' waves. It is a lot of hard work to bring a lobster to your dinner table. The catch is also regulated by size and the small ones have to be thrown back. To put it simple, lobsters are in a hard, exspensive place to get, thus the expense to do so reflects in the sale price. Enjoy some extra butter with that Lobster Tail :)

Probably the main reason it is so expensive is because it should be cooked alive, so it must be shipped alive, displayed alive. That is more costly than killing something, freezing it and wrapping it on little Styrofoam trays.
