Before they had electric irons (as far back as the 1700's at least) they had metal plates with handles. Washwomen heated them in the fire to get them hot enough to smooth out clothes.

The Iron Age is the last principal period in the three-age system for classifying pre-historic societies, preceded by the Bronze Age. Its date and context varies depending on the country or geographical region. Classically, the Iron Age is taken to begin in the 12th century BC in the ancient Near East, ancient Greece (with the Greek Dark Ages), and ancient India (with the post-Rigvedic Vedic civilization). Iron use, in smelting and forging for tools, appears in Nok civilization in Africa by 1200 BC.[1] In other regions of Europe, it started much later. The Iron Age began in the 8th century BC in Central Europe and the 6th century BC in Northern Europe. The Iron Age is usually taken to end in the Mediterranean with the onset of historical tradition during Hellenism and the Roman Empire, the onset of Buddhism and Jainism in India, the onset of Confucianism in China, or the early Middle Ages in the case of Northern Europe
The Iron Age in the Ancient Near East is believed to have begun with the discovery of iron smelting and smithing techniques in Anatolia or the Caucasus in the late 2nd millennium BC (circa 1300 BC).[3] From here it spread rapidly throughout the Near East as iron weapons replaced bronze weapons by the early 1st millennium BC. The use of iron weapons by the Hittites was believed to have been a major factor in the rapid rise of the Hittite Empire
In old books Hittite Empire is considered to have invented the Iron smelting technique, modern books conder instead an area where it was first utilized.

If you are talking about the metal, and not the appliance, then...
You could say God "invented" iron.
Man *discovered* iron, and he discovered it in ancient times, so there would be no specific date of discovery.
The "iron age" of the history of man is when mankind learned to properly use iron, in place of the bronze (from the previous "bronze age") he was using.
Google: "bronze age" and "iron age" for more info.
