According to Discovery channel's "Noah's Ark: The True Story", there was indeed a large flood about 5000 years ago. Adding this period to Biblical timelines, I get the age of humankind (NOT the Earth) as being around 6600 years.
Here is the timeline:
Adamwas 130 when he fathered Seth, then lived 800 years more and died @ 930
Seth was 105 when he fathered Enosh, then lived 807 years more and died @ 912
Enosh was 90 when he fathered Kenan, then lived 815 years more and died @ 905
Kenan was 70 when he fathered Mahalalel, then lived 840 years more and died @ 910
Mahalalel was 65 when he fathered Jared, then lived 830 years more and died @ 895
Jared was 162 when he fathered Enoch, then lived 800 years more and died @ 962
Enoch was 60 when he fathered Methuselah, then lived 300 years more and died @ 365
Methesulah was 187 when he fathered Lamech, then lived 782 years more and died @ 969
Lamech was 182 when he fathered Noah, then lived 595 years more and died @ 777

Noah was 600 when the great flood came.
Added to the 5000 years approximated by the Discovery Channel presentation, that is about 6600 years for humans.
What do you think?

It all depends on how you define human. Our predecessors have been around for a long time, slowly developing into what we define as human beings. I'm not sure anyone can actually define at what point our ancestors became 'humans'. To do that, we would have to be able to identify their thought processes, their mentalities and that we cannot do through any form of science. I guess we have to wait until someone builds a time machine.

Well, human tools have been found in Europe dating back 700,000 years ago and the oldest human remains in America are around 9000 years old with evidence of humans dating back to 13,000 years ago. So I'd say that that time line is pretty shot.

there is new evidence that crops up every now and then that humans were developing tools earlier than we thought. radiometric dating suggests the pyramids were built thousands of years earlier than theorised, in 10,000 BC. we'll say that humans have been around since x but then we'll find a skeleton that pushes the envelope by another ten thousand years. and no i don't believe in that noah crap

I hardly would call the flooding of the Black Sea to be a 'global flood', however.

Humanity, depending on how close to Homo sapiens sapiens you want to get, is anywhere from 6 million years old (granting the earliest hominid) to about 150,000 years old (granting first Homo sapiens) to about 30,000 years old (granting only Homo sapiens sapiens).
