I'm trying to look at other religions for guidance as my current situation just isn't doing it. I have found and gotten a lot out of the Dhammapada and just want to take that learning to a deeper level.

Some good books to check out would be "The Three Pillars of Zen" by Roshi Phillip Kapleau and of course "Buddhism for Dummies" by Jonathan Landaw and Stephan Bodian.

These books and sites helped me alot. I hope they will help you as well.

Just keep reading and studying it. There is a three book set by Eknath Easwaran that includes "The Upanishads," "The Baghavad Gita," and the "Dhammapada," which are really good. Technically it's Hinduism rather than Buddhism, but if you want to learn about Buddhism I suggest studying it's predecesor because that is what it originated from.

As for Buddhism, there are also great books out there although it's harder to find because a lot of authors had their own twist to it. If you want one that deals specifically with it, I suggest "The Doctrine of the Buddha" by George Grimm.

To become a Buddhist is easy.

Take refuge in the Triple Gem and commit yourself to the five precepts. Add a pinch of Allspice and you're a Buddhist.

Triple Gem - You take refuge in the Buddha, you take refuge in the Buddha's teachings, you take refuge in in the community of Buddha's followers.

Five Precepts (guidelines, not commandments):
1. Don't harm living things.
2. Only take that which is freely given.
3. Abstain from sexual misconduct.
4. Abstain from false speech.
5. Abstain from intoxicants (alternately, don't get intoxicated)
