Check the date on the label, to be sure it's not 3-4 days past the sell-by date.
Check interior to be sure it's still bright red. The outside layer may be brown, due to oxidation, but that is normal and expected.
No off odor.

Put a little video camera in there.
If it's getting porked by the sausage, I'd say it's no longer good.

if its a brownish green color then its bad, if it doesn't have a blood red look then its bad but if it is a light brown color then you might be able to eat it if it doesn't smell funny and you'll know it smell bad when u open it.but u have to eat it that day. or if you just don't know then throw it out. don't risk gettin sick.

smell it! that's the best way to tell. also, color should not be gray or grayish green - that's a bad sign!
