It's okay to be anything.

Early christianity had a number of diverse beliefs including the belief that Jesus was not divine. Later christianity labeled these as heresies.

It really depends on what church you go to and what they are willing to accept. Some are more liberal than others (as can be seen from other answers).

The real question is why? If you want to follow the ethical teachings of Jesus then a number of paths are open to you. I am an Atheist who considers Jesus a truly great ethicist. Agnosticism and Unitarianism are other alternatives. If, on the other hand, you are looking for the church as a community, you can probably attend most liberal churches without ever being questioned as to your core beliefs in the divinity of Jesus. The affirmations of the Nicene creed all begin with "we believe". You can look at it as an affirmation of the community's faith rather than your personal faith.

And how do YOU define a christian? Is a christian a person who believes in one god and follows the TEACHINGS of jesus? Or is a christian a person who believes that jesus is the son of god and that you are going to heaven only if you believe this to be true?

Alot of religion is based on personal views. You can still be christian and believe that jesus was just a normal person if you follow the moral code that he taught. Where everything gets muddled is when people try to tell you what you should believe. I believe that faith is a very individual thing and that though many can share a similar view, they are never going to be identical.

So, go on, be the individual you were meant to be.

How could you be a Christian and NOT believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ?

No, you must believe in Christ and follow His teachings. Otherwise, you're a Jehovh's Witness, a Mormon, Islamic or otherwise. You wouldn't be considered a Christian.

I dont belive so. To be a true Christian, I feel you must believe in teh divinity of Jesus. Afterall, thats what the entire religion is based upon. Christ being the son of God, who sits beside him in the kingdom of Heaven as our perfect substitutional sacrafice for sins we commit.

By definition you wouldn't be a christian if you didn't believe in Jesus Christ. There are plenty of good people who do what are known as Christian-like acts, but if they don't believe in Christ then they are not Christian

Depends on what you mean by divinity. I've struggled with the Trinity doctrine for years, but all the other doctrines (such as Unitarianism, and such) seemed false as well.

I think what is important is that you believe in the Father, and that he sent his only son to redeem mankind, and that you confess both the Father and Son with your mouth and actions.

No, this is the most important criteria for one who calls him or herself a Christian. Cults such as Jehovah's Witnesses deny the deity of Jesus and have changed the Bible to propagate this blasphemy.

Unfortunately no. The bible says the only way to God is through Jesus. I'm pagan. I do believe in God and in Christ, just not the religious crap that is spouted in churches all over the world.

That's impossible. To believe in Jesus you have to believe He is the Messiah. Jesus Himself, when asked if He was the son of God said "It is as you say."
