Some how, even though I'm very well versed in working out, I have managed to over work a muscle. I have strained my hamstring. Dont really know how, but it is in bad shape and hurts a lot. What is the best way to handle it. I dont want to have to go to the doctor for a strained muscle when all they'll do is give me a wrap and drugs to dull the pain. What is the best course of action with an overworked muscle? and, should I go ahead and wrap up my leg with an ace bandage?...and what would that do to the muscle?
Please give me your knowledge...

I'm not a physio but I studied a little exercise physiology and I would bet that the best treatment is rest. Rest your hamstring and very slowly get back into your routine. Ice is only any good if you use it straight after the injury, in order to reduce the swelling. A heat inducing cream might help with pain relief. Good luck.

Hi, I'm just browsing through and saw your question. I also enjoy sports very much and have some medical background to boot.

If it's a bad sprain (and really is a sprain!), apply some analgesic cream and avoid any strenous activity on your hamstring. However, remember to stretch your hamstring daily, for about 1 min, gently, without any pain.

Remember that muscles are connected to our bones, so you might have injured the connective tissue attached to the bones, which takes longer to heal than normal muscle injuries.

Sometimes you might be working out in a wrong way, as you might be well versed in working out in a way that hurts you in the long term. See a physical trainer for help as well.

Well if its totally torn, it might require surgery to reattach. I suspect you'd know if that's the case.

Short of that, time. Sadly, hammies can take quite a while to heal, like a couple of months.

I've only had relatively minor pulls in that area, so I can't help THAT much. I switched to other workouts that didn't use it much to stay in shape while it healed. Swimming worked OK, and after a couple weeks, cycling didn't seem to bother it as long as I had the bike adjusted correctly.
