She says that the holy spirit chose her and that she can do it? What is speaking in strange tongues? How did she get selected to do that? What religion is that? Do you think she's being honest about that? Sorry...I have many questions about this...

Speaking in tongues is a gift of the Holy Spirit, it is considered by many to be a lesser gift. Only in the seriously Pentecostal groups is it considered to have more importance.
It is one of two things. In one case it is the utterance of what sounds to the human ear like gibberish.
In the other example it is speaking in a language one does not know within earshot of a speaker of that language.
Within the context of this is the idea that God has a desire to speak directly to that person and an efficient way to do this with proof that is God is to make one person speak a language they could not possible know.
Being "selected" is an inappropriate perception of what has happened and lacks the humility God would desire.
As Paul wrote in Corinthians" if I speak with the tongues of angels and have not love I am a clanging cymbal."
Not enough room to write the rest. Look up 1 Corinthians 13, and 14.

I've heard of this phenomenon (or disorder, depending on the source) before. Very prevalent among the Charismatic Christian movement. It's also referred to as "glossolalia."

I've always wondered: if people who claim to be possessed by an angel, or the Holy Spirit, really are "speaking in tongues," why is their language incomprehensible to those for whom it is intended to benefit?

I'm a Christian, but I frankly think that speaking in tongues is a matter of self-induced hysteria. I've witnessed (no pun) such an event at a "tent meeting" I attended when I was a bored teenager. Freaked me out, and I thought it honestly detracted from the message of salvation and God's love.

There is nothing in the bible that says that speaking in tongues means speaking jibberish. It was actually meant to help the followers of Jesus to spread the gospel.

If you read the bibical accounts of tongues - it was used so that those listening to the message heard it in their own native language.

Pentacostals believe in tongues in the sense that they are the language of the Holy Spirit. There's nothing in the bible to support this view.

She is probably being honest about it - and truly believes, because that is what she has been taught. She has been taught that it is important and necessary to be chosen to speak in tongues.

Also look to Paul's advice about it - he says no one should ever speak in tongues unless there is a translator. Otherwise it is just to show off and nothing is gained. It was meant to further God.

The first record of speaking in tongues was the apostles in the bible speaking in tongues after the Holy Ghost was given to them. They spoke to the crowds and regardless of who heard them, they ALL UNDERSTOOD them. That is what speaking in tongues means. It is the ability to speak so that a person can understand you even if he doesn't speak your language. If you can't understand what a person is saying then it's just baloney. The gift of tongues was given so we all could hear the gospel and it was only for ancient times because the apostles didn't have books yet and needed to preach the gospel to the world...

Try an experiment, record what she is saying and have her repeat her self and say the same thing twice. I PROMISE you she won't be able to do it and will find every excuse why she can't. (:

She probably believes it. It's called glossolalia by some, or "speaking in tongues" in certain denominations such as Pentecostal.

I would simply accept that this is what her stated belief is. No reason to discuss it, challenge it, etc.

It's her thing. Whatcha gonna do?

I'm a christian and I stay far, far away from the tongue-talking thing.
It's downright demonic in nature and not of God. Constant babbling is of a pagan nature....Christ told us not to babble or use repeated prayers over and over again.
