That you cannot listen and dance to regular music on the radio? My MIL only listens to Christian music and was so ashamed when she got up and danced to something that wasn't Christian.
Is she taking it over the edge ot is it really true?

I think she is following a 'religion' more than the bible.... in Philippians 4:8-9 it says...8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

so, if what you hear or do lines up with that, it isnt something to be ashamed of. there are plenty of songs in secular music that are not nasty.... ya just gotta pick and choose things that glorify God... but you can dance.... Michel was struck barren because David was dancing before the Ark of the covenant, and was embarrassed by him.... you can go to extremes in 'religion' which is not what God was meaning at all.

There is nowhere in the Bible that says you cannot listen and dance to music on the radio. In the New Testament it says that Jesus went to a wedding at Canaa and there must have been music and dancing there. There is no record of him raising any objection.

I don't know of anywhere in the Old Testament that objects to music or dancing either.

Despite this some, (and I stress the word some, not all) Christians are opposed to merrymaking as they see it as ungodly. Where they get this from I don't know, but it is a tradition going back at least as far as the Puritans in the 16th/17th centuries.

I was brought up as a Catholic and my parents never had any objection to pop music when I was a youngster. When some of my friends said their parents wouldn't allow them to listen to pop music I was gobsmacked, as I realised even at the tender age of 6 that most pop songs were about love and therefore couldn't be harmful at all, much less go against the teachings of Jesus, but there's no pleasing some people.

Luckily, as a catholic, you are not as restricted as other religions. It is not a sin by catholic belief to listen to that. I work at a fair every year at my church and we have a keg of beer behind the food booth and play all kinds of music, non of which is christian music. All of the priest and teachers come out a drink an dance. I was even at a youth conference a few years ago and the bishop did karaoke with the seminarians and they did MEN IN BLACK by will smith. Your MIL is taking it too far.

there is nothing in the bible that says you have to listen to only christian music and there is nothing in the bible that says you cant dance to any music. T^hat is what a christian calls religion or man made beliefs or rules. Religion is whats wrong with christianity today. I do believe there is wrong music to listen to (music about getting drunk, sex before marriage, doing drugs lyrics againt Christ) or even dancing inapropriatly with anyone but your spouse. Our Christian testimony is the most sacred thing to protect and whether the bible doesnt say anything about dancing (other than david and others danced for joy) dirty dancing in public isnt showing a good testimony to the lost people that know you.

I guess that depends what the song was. Did it have a lot of cuss words, blasphemy, or debauchery in it? If it was a good song that didn't include a lot of that then yeah a little over the edge. Oh and that pretty much goes for all Christians, Catholic Christian or Protestant.

There is nothing in Catholic Doctrine that forbids one from enjoying the various genres of music. Common sense alone dictates that one should stay clear of music that promotes themes with no socially redeemable qualities. While there is nothing inherently wrong with limiting one's self to Christian music, there's no reason to freak out for listening/dancing to "secular" music.

I don't think she's over the edge, but there are a lot of "Christians" (Catholic and Protestant) that seem to think anything they do has nothing to do with being a Christian. Catholics just go confess to a priest, and Protestants think they were forgiven in advance. If somebody thinks it's wrong to dance to "wordly" music, I won't criticize them for that.

I never read in the Bible, "Thou Shalt Not Dance to anything other than Christian music"! I think alot of people of faith create things in their heads that are simply not true. I am a Christian, but I do not subscribe to the idea that we are not supposed to have fun.

Heck no! My father was raised Catholic....through the 60's and 70's. He liked Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, the Beatles, CCR, among others of that time, and he listens to mostly Alternative Rock now. He has one sibling, a sister (don't laugh), and she listens to mostly country and some pop (she has teens). Their parents (my grandparents) listen to country music (yes, they're still alive).

The only Catholics I've ever known to listen to only Christian music was the Priest of the Catholic church in our town (which we didn't attend much). We attended church at our grandparents' church mostly, and THAT Priest listened to all types of music, danced, drank beer at Oktoberfest, and told jokes. Granted, they weren't nasty or anything, but still funny. AT the Oktoberfest, which was held at said church, they played mostly country music, but that was because the majority of the people who attended the church are my grandparents' age. Then later that night, they usually held a dance with modern music for the younger kids.
