i own a repair shop, and even a tiny pin hole will not show up on a pressure check test sometimes,it sounds like you could possibly have a tiny ,tiny hole in the heater core causing this to happen and also sometimes when the engine deposits the unneeded coolant back in to the reservoir jug it will make them smell a little bit,try checking to see if the carpet on the passengers side feels damp any at all this might help you determine if its a heater core or not, good luck with it,i hope this helps.

well when you use dakota and smell of coolant in the cab. it can mean only one thing heater core. these are known through out the dakota fourms and goes bad on a regular basis. unless you can do it your self it will cost you over $400 to get it replaced. you have to remove the wole front dash to get to the heater core. do a search for dakota heater core problem and a long list will pop up.
