in the world is ZIFF? Mosiah 11:8 "King Noah built many elegant and spacious buildings and ornamented them with fine work and precious things, including ziff. "Shouldn't this be something understandable? Dictionary.com says it's a "Fictional chemical substance"..So what is it a pretend chemical or what? Elder Russell M. Nelson reports that it's some kind of curved sword, http://moroni10.com/hanna.html.. Why would this be so hard to understand? If ziff is pretend maybe the rest of the Book of Mormon is too? Jim

I wouldn't say it's touted as beeing far more plain and precise, just more complete. The fact that it was translated only once (and allegedly through revelation from God) also adds to the liklihood that there are less variations or interpretations of man. This is not to say there could be words that are difficult to explain or just no translation for. In those cases you just have to use the word (as you may know if you've ever done any translation work). Anyway, it's all relgion, which is left up to personal interpretation and faith in the end. Because religion is faith based I have no right telling someone else what they believe is wrong or false. I just try and respect them all.

Ziff in the Book of Mormon Index (at the back) says that it was probably a metal used by the Nephites. It's not made up. Why would it be? Don't you think that if Joseph Smith made this up he would have used a metal which was then known to man? To be honest, this actually proves more that it wasn't made up.
Personally, I wouldn't doubt that it is a metal we know of now but not then, something called by a different name. And possibly it is something we haven't discovered here yet. Or it could very well have been an alloy. Naturally, this paragraph is speculation on what it could be and is not doctrine or anything. One thing, though: when we go to heaven and when we meet Nephi or King Noah, let's ask them.

Jim..always love your questions and answers...
"Shouldn't this be something understandable?"
So, are you telling me you understand 100% completely everything in the bible?
There's alot in the bible I have no idea about, yet I do not reject it as scripture simply because "I" don't have the complete scriptural knowlegde. I trust the Holy Ghost's promptings and the assurance I have received from my Heavenly Father that what I believe is true... I wouldn't take "dictionary.com"'s word over an apostle of the Lord. You do, that's fine. That is your choice. The Book of Mormon may be "pretend" to you...again, your choice.
Science suggests the earth was created by the "big bang" theory...so that must also be true then - because "science" or science books suggests that...evolution must be correct also... ???
Just because we don't understand something doesn't necessarily mean it's incorrect...all will be revealed and we just need to be prepared for that.

Well, I do not know either, but to say the whole book is wrong for a word is illogical, so we come across a item we do not know, so what? Can you tell me you understood every thing in the Bible?
You twisted the statement by Joseph Smith. This is what he said.
Prophet Joseph Smith said: "I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book."
(Book of Mormon | Preface Introduction:6)
"Most correct", not perfect as you phrased it.
