He can, but dogs have a digestive system that is setup to handle these things much better than ours.

Here a couple articles to put your mind at ease:

http://rawfed.com/myths/bacteria.html

They are talking about raw food in the articles, but salmonella is a big concern with people not familar with raw feeding.

Just watch your dog for any signs of illness, vomiting, diarhea etc. I don't think he'll have any trouble, but if he does make an appointment with the vet, and be sure to mention the peanut butter.

Yes, dogs are susceptible to salmonella. Many healthy dogs actually test positive for Salmonella in saliva and feces, however, due to their digestive systems, they are considerably less susceptible to food borne illness than humans. This is due to higher amounts of salivary enzymes and a stronger concentration of stomach acids. Coupled with a much shorter intestinal tract, this makes for a substantially higher resistance to things like salmonella and E. coli. Simply put, any nasties that survive the trip into the intestines are not there long enough to multiply into the necessary numbers to cause an illness. Exposure to food borne bacteria in significant numbers will cause illness very quickly, usually a matter of hours. So if your dog hasn't gotten sick by now, I wouldn't think it is going to be an issue. you were probably in more danger of contracting this nasty illness than your dog, but as i said, you would know you had it rather quickly.

No, dog's digestive systems are nothing like ours. If the dog is healthy then the dog has nothing to fear from salmonella. Here's some information about bacteria and your dog's digestive system that may help http://rawfed.com/myths/bacteria.html
