fordman is right. More than likely it's the modulator. It takes about 5 minutes to change. Very simple its located in the lower rear of the tranny. It will have a vacuum line running to it. Their is a simple check. Unplug the vacuum line (if tranny fluid runs out the modulator is definitely bad). Plug a hose into the modulator that is long enough you can suck on it. If there is no resistance (you just suck air) then the modulator is bad. This is a very simple check/fix and will save you a bunch of money if it is only the modulator.

Third gear in that transmission is direct drive. There is no gear involved. It is a clutch. The failed modulator or the vacuum hose to it may make it shift at a higher speed. Kick-down lever also would make it shift at a higher speed, but it would still shift. Low fluid pressure from a clogged filter may make it fail to engage at all and of course if the clutch is just worn out, it won't engage.

with a bad modulator it should still shift, just at a higher speed, like 50 mph, it could be a worn out gear, have your transmission shop check it.

Have the tranny checked out - you might be getting low on tranny fluid or the screen might be clogged or your whole transmission might be going bad-The sooner your catch the prob. the better
