I am trying to visit the Adelphi University (Garden City Campus). However, I'm not quite sure what to stop to get off at if I take the Peter Pan bus from South Station...where could I get off in New York that will lead me to the Long Island Railroad that way I can just take the train and walk. So, my question is: What stop would I get off at (from the Peter Pan bus) in order to get to the Long Island Railroad?

Get off the bus at Port Authority - located approximately (large expanse over several blocks - just trying to give you a persepctive) at 40th Street and 8th Avenue. You have to go to Penn Station (approximately 34th Street and 8th Avenue). On a nice day, and without heavy luggage, it's an easy walk - ten minutes or so. But, if you are carrying luggage or the weather isn't good, either take the subway (buy a $4 Metrocard - you'll need the other $2 for your return trip) one stop to 34th Street, Penn Station - you can easily get the A, E, C, 1,2 or 3 train at Port Authority. Or, if you want to take the bus,($2 - either a MetroCard or exact change) walk to Ninth Avenue and 42nd Street and take the M16 - and get off at 34th Street and 8th Avenue (tell the driver you want to get off at Penn Station). In Penn Station, you get the Long Island Railroad and take it to Garden City; see schedule:

Additional: You get the Long Island Railroad at Penn Station, NOT GRAND CENTRAL!

Best bet... to to take Amtrak to NY Penn Station, there you can get onto the LIRR.

Take the Hempstead line from Penn Station in Manhattan to the Nassau Boulevard Station. The campus is a short walk east on South Avenue. Travel time from New York City is approximately forty-five minutes.
Rush Hour Fare $ 13.00 Each way (Save almost half if you buy your tickets online http://mta.info/lirr/ )

You need to get to Penn Station. I'm not sure that the Bus goes there. I think it end up at the Bus Station on 42nd Street. You need to get down to 34th street.

Get off at Port Authority (42nd between 7th and 8th). From there, you stay underground and you can catch the subway to Grand Central Station on 34th (between 7th and 8th).
