Say if I exercised 5 times a week, 30 minutes each time. Should I run slowly for longer, quicker more intensively or do weights too? Thanks

The most effective thing to do since you exercise 5 times a week and want to lose weight is the following:

Three days of cardio, like running. The key point is intensity. The more intense, the more calories you will burn.
Now 30 minutes are plenty of minutes and it is not easy to maintain a very intense exercise for such a long period of time, 3 times a week. So alternate and run slower longer periods of time some days, others do a more intense rhythm, sometimes do some hilly terrain, etc. Just a combination depending on what you like and feel like doing. It will make it more fun and give you a better fit.
This cardio exercise will speed up your metabolism which will burn fat.

Two days a week take a rest from running or whatever cardio you decide to do (cycling, swimming, etc.) And do some muscle toning, specially upper body. You do not need to get bulky, but firm. Muscles weight more than fat, but they are the fat burners in our body, so you need muscle to reduce fat. the more muscle you have, the more fat you will burn and the faster you metabolism will be.
So firm up your upper body as you are already jogging. Work on your arms, back, chest and abs. They will help your posture too and give you a rest and variety from all the joggin.

Do stretch before but specially after exercising and eat sensible.

You have a full program that will give you fast and long term results.

to lose weight sensibly you need to follow a healthy diet, eating 3 meals a day and having a balance of protein and carbs aswell as eating 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. Its important that you also drink 8 glasses of water a day too. Exercise should be carried out regular 3 x a week for about 1 hour. Exercise should be varied and include walking, running and aerobic exercise. Stretching is also very important before and after exercise to ensure that you warm up and warm down again. This helps prevent pulled and strained muscles.

running is meant to be the best exercise for loosing weight quickly and i tend to find if i run for 5 minutes and walk for 5 minutes is good as it means i an go for longer cos i have breaks but it still means i get out of breath and have a good workout. It also means that u set yourself a limit and stops you just 'giving up' whenever you find it hard. Hope that helps

Rowing is a top 5 exercise-it works more muscle groups than just about anything else. I'm talking about full body involvement rowing-( legs and arms on a sliding seat).

The best weight loss and toning excercises that wont kill you are swimming, walking and skipping - so dont ruin your knees for the sake of dropping some pounds - do it gently and it will stay off
good luck - im a walking girl now - i never knew i had legs that went so far til i went on a diet - i believed they only went as far as the car!!!

Climb stairs, it is great fat burner and reshapes your legs and butt FAST!!!! If your going to run, sprint for a few minutes then walk, you burn more calories and you get your heart rate up. Weights are good for your arms, shoulders and back and if you use ten pounders u will see results faster- even if you can only do I few at first (you wont bulk up, dont worry).

this is the most effective type of cardio to do. it increases your metabolic rate while you rest for the following 24 hours after your workout. click the link to the journal article. you'll see that those who did this type of cardio lost more fat than the control group who only did mild intensity cardio.
